An ancient crosswalk

The streets were open sewers and the sidewalks were on the sides. You used a "crosswalk" to get from one sidewalk to another. Some of the sidewalks had white stones embedded in them to allow torch light to reflect a little bit and help you on your way. You can tell which of the buildings were homes and which were shops or stores by the threshold. A shop or store would have a grove in the stone for the door to slide along when the store was closed. Homes did not.
